Bait and Switch

I had decided to let this last post lie, but after a conversation regarding David Simpson with Calvary Chapel Motherwell, I felt it was time to share my final meeting with Jim Nicol (former pastor of Ocean Hills Church) at Starbucks in San Clemente.  He met me before his return to Scotland.  He was asked to resign from Ocean Hills Church under the same cloud of controversy that he created around me and instructed to focus on his family.

Jim Nicol wanted to meet to apologize for the way he treated me while I was on staff with him at Ocean Hills Church.  He admitted that what he did to me was wrong and inexcusable.  With tears in his eyes, he asked for forgiveness and apologized.  I told him that Roxie and I had forgiven him as soon as it happened because the Lord had already prepared us for what we would go through.  He simply commented... such grace, grace.

I then asked if he would do one favor for me.  I asked that he would speak to one family on my behalf.  It was the family of a guitar student of mine at Ocean Hills.  He had recently come back into my life through a mutual friend that was attending Calvary Chapel.  Jim Nicol met with his mom and shared with her a 20 or 30 page document filled with falsified events, false accusations and lies.  I asked him to go to this family and let them know he admitted his wrong doing and apologized.  I wanted to clear the air so that my former student would feel comfortable at our church.

This is when the bait and switch happened.  He looked at me and denied the existence of such a document.  He said that he knew of no such document.  He said the board created a document, but he had nothing to do with it.  What Jim Nicol didn't know is I have the document.  So I know it does exist and I know it's contents.  I also know the names of the people who Jim Nicol used to build a case against me.  I have their "confidential" documents and the falsified information they presented.  All of which I had no knowledge of until I received this "confidential" document.  I also know the names that Jim Nicol proposed as being against me and the reasons they were against me.  All of which were fabrications.

Jim then looked at me and said, if I had to do it all over again I would do the same thing.  I was dumbfounded.  In essence, he took back his apology.  I did not give any indication of my surprise.  I just listened.  He then looked at me, teared up again and said he was wrong for doing what he did and apologized.  It left me thinking that he really had no intent of apologizing, but someone asked him to do it and he did it in order to gain something else.  Perhaps a stronger platform for his new non-profit venture.  Perhaps to get back into good graces with Calvary Chapel.  I'm not sure, but I can honestly say after meeting with him that nothing changed and his trail of deceit will continue.

While I was in the midst of dealing with Jim Nicol, I had a conversation with David Simpson.  David Simpson was another victim of Jim Nicol's lies and false accusations in Scotland.  As I listened to his story, I realized it was exactly like mine.  Jim Nicol attempted to tarnish David Simpson's reputation and then led a church split.  Although David has moved on, it is something that one never forgets and it can wear on a person's soul.

The unfortunate thing with gossip and slander is once the water is colored, you will always have four groups of people.

Group 1:  Those who simply do not believe the bad report.  The know you and they stand with you based on friendship and relationship.

Group 2:  Those who believe the bad report.  They have a blind loyalty to the Jim Nicol's of the world.  They are taken by the sociopathic charm and are willing to believe whatever they are told.

Group 3:  Those who do not want to get involved.  This group usually stays away from the person who is tarnished simply because they do not want the drama.  They don't know if it's true or not, but they simply don't care and want to move on.  This group is the largest group (at the time of the events) and many will simply find new relationships to grow.

Group 4:  Those who are not part of the situation.  I thank God for this group.  They have no history with the situation and simply judge you based on face value.  This is the group we are pastoring at Calvary Chapel San Clemente.  There are some in Group 1 with us, but most are in Group 4.  The ones in Groups 2 and 3 are in other local churches.  We see them around town.  They wish us well.  But they stay far away and talk about us without our knowledge.  They are victims of Jim Nicol as well.

I have chronicled my experience in support of Pastor David Simpson who is a man of God and who suffered as I suffered.  Roxie and I are blessed.  God has given us a great fellowship with great people who love Jesus and love each other.  We have a great community that understands grace and extend God's love.  I pray for all those in leadership who are in similar circumstances.  God is the One who vindicates.  Be faithful to the mission that you've been entrusted.  Keep preaching through the storms and God will establish you for if God is for you, who can be against you.

My thoughts on Pastor Chuck. I served with Pastor Chuck in the early 2000's. Initially I came to launch the School of Worship at the invitation of Brian Brodersen, but within a month I was overseeing and leading worship as Pastor Chuck's worship leader and later overseeing the studio which led to the relaunch of Calvary Chapel Music. So privileged to have served with a man that God used at such a pivotal time in history.

Note from CCOF Regarding Pastor Chuck Smith

We wanted to let everyone know that Pastor Chuck’s knee surgery went well and that he is now in the recovery process. We would ask that no one contact him so he can focus on rest and recovery in order to get him back with us as soon as possible. Please continue to pray for a complete and quick recovery, and that the Lord allows him some well deserved rest and refreshment.

Praise The Lord!!!

On December 6, 2010 a man by the name of Hal Henderson read a slanderous letter about me to the congregation at Ocean Hills.  This letter placed my wife and I in a very bad light and suggested that I had an affair.  I received numerous calls from all over the country asking me if I had in fact committed adultery.  It was a dark and painful time for my wife and I.  I recorded this letter as it was being broadcast over the internet.  I would be within my rights to sue for defamation of character and slander, but have chosen not to out of obedience to the Lord.

Recently, I was approached once again by Jim Nicol.  The church under his leadership has suffered tremendous loss.  He wanted to meet over three issues.  (1) A false accusation concerning my son.  I asked him to stop using family and friends to broker a meeting.  It was unbecoming of a senior pastor.  (2) An event that a colleague of mine wanted to do.  I have an ongoing relationship with this person and I told him to have the person call me if he wanted me involved.  (3) A former staff member who I opposed who turned out to be a rapist and child molester.  I told him that his position to defend this person was not something I couldn’t understand and challenged him to think more about the victims than about his own personal reputation.  I agreed to meet with Jim Nicol and his board as Jim has not proven to be trustworthy.  I have also been advised by my mentors to not meet with Jim Nicol alone based on his reputation.  I received one response to my three emails that ignored my request to meet.

In my exchange of emails between myself and the board, I reached out to Hal Henderson.  He was the gentleman that read the letter under the direction of Jim Nicol.  On a Saturday morning, I received a call from Hal Henderson.  He apologized for what he did against me and admitted that he acted on the information that he received from Jim Nicol and apologized for doing so.  We had an amazing time of reconciliation and our friendship is restored.

I reached out to Jim, but it is clear that he is unrepentant and unwilling to reconcile.  Any man that is unwilling to meet with his board has something to hide.  I approached each member of his board individually to go over the misinformation he distributed about me.  Rick Cazessus, Marty Goebel and Jeff Wade either refused or ignored my request to meet in violation of Matthew 18.  It is clear that these men do not have the integrity to fulfill their role as elders.  I’ve since discovered that Jim has a reputation of creating false accusations and slanderous remarks.  He did this to a pastor in Scotland and also led a divisive church split.  All of this is verified by great men of God.  A man’s reputation follows him and Jim has made a name for himself.  I rejoice over my restored relationship with Hal.  I grieve over Jim and his board’s continued divisiveness.  Jesus is not honored by such men.

My final communication to the Ocean Hills Board simply acknowledged their unwillingness to reconcile.  I also affirmed that God has called my wife and I to pastor a growing work in San Clemente.  As churches Worship Life and Ocean Hills are going in two different directions and that I have nothing against Jim or the board at Ocean Hills and that we will have to agree to differ and move on.  I also stated that I don’t see our churches working together with their current views of Worship Life and my family.  I encouraged them to speak well of Worship Life and committed to them that we would speak well of Ocean Hills.

My wife and I continue to pray for God’s blessing on Ocean Hills.  We also pray for that blessed day when each individual board member will speak to me face to face concerning the misinformation they’ve been given.  Finally we pray for Jim Nicol that he would have a face to face encounter with Jesus that will fill him with God’s love and grace.  We pray for the day when we will be able to be truly reconciled as friends.

The Final Word

My wife and I sent two confidential emails to the board requesting that the board correct the misinformation that they distributed to volunteers, congregants and staff both on the internet and in numerous private meetings that were conducted by Jim Nicol, Evan Liewer and various board members.  The first letter was carefully crafted with the help of 5 Calvary Chapel pastors.  Our first request was ignored.  They did respond to pastors that we copied in for accountability sake and also blind copied other pastors in an effort to discredit my wife and I, but they never responded to us directly.

After our second confidential email, which we wrote in an effort to de-escalate the situation and simply say all is behind us... we forgive what has been done... we are moving forward in grace and pray that God continues to bless the ministry at Ocean Hills... we did get a response that was sent certified mail.  It was addressed to me only, dated January 4, 2010 and said...

Dear Holland,
We love you, we forgive you, God bless you.
Yours in Christ

Signed Jim Nicol
Ocean Hills Board

It was not written by Jim but by Evan Liewer, but signed by Jim.  It was typed and demonstrated no effort towards reconciliation or peace.

Roxie and I appreciate the effort on the part of Pastor Jim Nicol and the staff and board of Ocean Hills Church to acknowledge our communications to them.  We hold no ill will towards the current leadership, we see God’s hand in all of it... moving us to where God has us today - planting a new church in San Clemente.  We have nothing but fond memories of our time at Ocean Hills Church with Pastor Skip Heitzig and following.  There were too many highlights to remember to focus on a few unfortunate decisions made by the most current Pastor and board.  We pray God’s best for them as they continue serving the congregation at Ocean Hills Church.  In our view, this matter is closed and behind us.  Please join us in praying for the new work God desires to build in San Clemente and pray that God would pour out His Spirit in a massive way through out South County.

P.S.  We are now several months past the events that God used to start a new work in South Orange County.  We continue to hear the distribution of misinformation including now the suggestion that I committed theft of equipment that I actually donated.  We hear that we’It’s sad that there has not been resolution on the part of the leadership and staff at Ocean Hills Church.  It appears that their issues continue even after my departure.  I believe that speaks for itself.  Roxie and I continue to pray for God to bless them.

Pastor Holland Davis’ Response To The Board’s Letter That Was Presented To The Congregation At Ocean Hills Church

Dear Friends of Ocean Hills…

As many of you know from my open letter, I have departed Ocean Hills for a new work that I am confident that the Lord has started. I would like to address some recent events that have prompted some serious questions.

I was as shocked as all of you when Hal Henderson read the letter that Jim Nicol and the board approved concerning my departure from Ocean Hills Church during both Sunday morning services.  I was especially stunned because we watched it from our home computer knowing it was being viewed publicly on the web broadcast.  I recorded the audio feed as the letter was being read.  Thankfully it has since been edited from the archives.  As you can imagine, Roxie and I were devastated.

Since the reading of the letter, we have received numerous calls saying that a moral failure had been committed.  After much prayer and at the request of trusted counsel I have decided to respond.  First of all, I am married to the most amazing woman God ever created on earth.  Her beauty, wisdom, love for Jesus, companionship, faithfulness to our family and marriage makes me the wealthiest man in the world.  We are more in love today than ever before and I can’t imagine doing anything that would hurt her in any way or jeopardize our relationship.  Secondly, I am deeply saddened by the vague wording of the letter that would leave any question in the mind of God loving people that there would be any hint of indiscretion on my part.  There is no moral failure on my part that would warrant this kind of conjecture, just a difference of opinion on issues that have led us to part ways and my desire to do so in a godly manner.

I am especially aware of the timing of these events as Roxie and I have announced that we are moving forward towards a new venture of faith.  This reminds me of Nehemiah 4:7,8… Now it happened, when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the walls of Jerusalem were being restored and the gaps were beginning to be closed, that they became very angry, and all of them conspired together to come and attack Jerusalem and create confusion.  The work of the enemy is always to bring confusion to any new work of God.  The number of phone calls we have received are a clear indication that people are confused as to what has happened and why it has happened.  What did Paul say in the midst of confusion?  He said, I know in whom I have believed and I am persuaded that He is able to keep me.  Roxie and I are resting in God as our defense and we are committed to walking in the love and grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Dear friends, please know that Roxie and I are in a great place.  We believe that God has called to begin a new venture of faith. We are excited about the vision God is giving us and we are working to build lasting partnerships that will become vital relationships for a new work.  We don’t pretend to have all knowledge so we have secured great men of God to advise and mentor us through this time.  We see his hand of favor leading and guiding us.

I want to encourage you towards a helpful course of action.  One that brings honor to our Lord and unifies the Church in South Orange County.  When you speak of Ocean Hills, speak blessing.  Pray for them as a body.  When you speak of the work that Roxie and I are pioneering, speak blessings.  Pray for us as we build our team.  Let’s conduct ourselves in a way that is consistent with people who have encountered the love of Jesus.  Let’s see if we can be living examples of God’s grace.  Most important, let’s do something great together in South Orange County that will result in thousands of lives being transformed by the power of God’s Word lived through the lives of authentic followers of Christ.

Blessings…

An Open Letter To Friends Of Ocean Hills

Dear Friends of Ocean Hills…

Over 5 1/2 years ago, Pastor Skip Heitzig invited Roxie and myself to partner with him in a great venture of faith called Ocean Hills Church.  We had no idea what God had in store for us, but with excitement we came alongside of Pastor Skip and faithfully served to build a strong, healthy and vibrant ministry.  When I arrived, we didn’t have a sound engineer, we were lacking equipment, we didn’t have musicians and within the first year we saw growth and stability.  Today, Ocean Hills has  a strong worship ministry with a media department that reaches the world through the internet, the ability to record live worship CD’s and a well developed infrastructure that is ready for growth.

Our time has not been without challenges.  When Pastor Skip received God’s call to return to Calvary Albuquerque to bring health to a difficult situation, he asked me to stay and be a stabilizing factor at Ocean Hills.  During the ensuing transition there were many faces in the pulpit, but Roxie and I remained a constant presence through our teaching, serving and leading God’s people in fulfillment of Pastor Skip’s request.  This year that commitment was completed when the board announced Jim Nicol as Senior Pastor of Ocean Hills Church.
With so much accomplished, Roxie and I believe that a new season is upon us.  It was the Apostle Paul that said… forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,  I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.  Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. (Phil 3:13b, 14, 12 NKJV).

Therefore, it is our strong conviction that God is leading us out of Ocean Hills into a new venture of faith.  We have mixed emotions as we “lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of us.”  We have sorrow because we have fond memories of our time at Ocean Hills and we will miss worshipping with you all.  We also have excitement as we move forward into the future.  But most of all we have gratitude for the privilege of serving our Lord together.
We want to thank Pastor Skip Heitzig for inviting us to come.  We serve well together and I look forward to continued opportunities to serve in the future.  We want to thank the board of elders for inviting us to continue our service at Ocean Hills.  We want to thank Pastor Jim Nicol for continued partnership in ministry at Ocean Hills.  We especially want to thank over 50 staff and volunteers who I personally had the privilege of working side by side with each and every week.  You make ministry such a joy and so easy to serve.

As we move forward into the future, we covet your prayers.  We also encourage you to continue the work which was started by Pastor Skip and myself.  Be a community of the Word, a community who worships and a community who serves in love.

Roxie and I look forward to seeing what the Lord will do in you and in us as we continue to walk according to His ways.

Blessings…

An Open Letter From Holland Davis

Dear Friends of Ocean Hills...

God's Faithfulness...

Rox and I are listening to a prophecy that was sung over us 25 yrs ago and marveling over God's faithfulness and enduring love. Eph 1:17.

Happy Birthday to my beautiful bride!!!

Check out my blog Life in HD at... hollanddavis.com.

Today is my wife Roxie's birthday... this morning I was reflecting on the story of how we met and the prayer that I prayed to the Lord in asking for a wife. In those days I was a young, up and coming preacher in the making. I led worship at the Calvary Chapel in Escondido, Ca. I taught a Bible study that had 40 to 50 people in it of all ages. I was in a Christian Rock band that was doing really well... but in my heart I wanted a wife. So I prayed for someone that loved the Lord, but wasn't religious, was independent and loved old Rock and Roll... don't ask why... I still can't figure it out. Well... Roxie was the answer to that prayer and she fit every description to a tee.

I remember playing country dance music for a friend of mine who got married in Julian. In between sets, my pastor came up to me and said he really needed to talk to me. I thought I was in trouble for playing country music because I was the worship leader of the church!!! We were down in the basement where the refreshments were and he said... do you know that girl Roxie in the church? I didn't know her name and I said... no. He said, she's really cute and she dresses sharp. I knew instantly who he was talking about. He said to me... she's got the hots for you... you need to go for it!!! He then told me about the relationship she was in that wasn't healthy for her as a Christian.

So... as an obedient man of God under the direction of my pastor - I went for it. Only it wasn't as easy as I thought. Every time I would try to meet her it wouldn't work out. We'd go to restaurants, but the group was so big we couldn't sit by each other. It was torture. One day I heard she was sick with strep throat. So I took a friend of mine - Mark Dupont - and we went over to pray for her. Mark and I were prayer partners and ministered together frequently. As we were praying, Mark said open your mouth. So she did. Mark stuck his finger in her mouth and said in the name of Jesus be healed. She literally had a severe and gross infection on the back of her throat and by the next morning, she was completely healed. Not only that, but it has never come back. After that, I invited her to come see my play at a local Christian Coffee House called His Place Restaurant. Afterwards we went to the local Denny's and the rest is history.

One memory that really sticks out was the Holiness Unto The Lord Conference at Vineyard Anaheim. There was this old methodist preacher by the name of Leonard Ravenhill. He would open every session with a hymn and I discovered that Roxie knew every stanza of every hymn. I never knew that not only had I married a lady who had an intense love for God, but she had a legacy of parents, grandparents, etc. that had a rich vocabulary of worship and a deep reverence for God... although there wasn't a religious bone in her body.

She still continues to amaze me to this day. There are moments where I'm at my lowest point and she will leave me a voice mail that will be straight from the throne of heaven. There are times where I'm feeling weak and she will lovingly give me that word that motivates me to keep going. Usually it sounds like nagging... but I've learned to interpret it in light of Christ in her!!!

We would often have people pray over us - not because we ask for it - but because they felt led by God to do it... one of the pictures that God used to describe Roxie is that she is an exotic Bird of Paradise. Unique, beautiful, not-common, special, exotic... that describes Roxie. We have now been together longer than we were single and I am growing to love her more and more each day.

So to my beloved bride and closest companion... my friend and lover... my wife and the mother of our kids... I wish you to a Happy Birthday!!!

Big Daddy Weave!!!

I want to send out Big Kudos to Tony Guerrero at Saddleback Church for arranging for me to meet Big Daddy Weave. Tonight Big Daddy Weave played with Kirk Franklin. They opened up the evening with their version of “Let It Rise.” I am so thankful for their passion and excitement over this song. It was such a great moment to finally get to meet them and thank them in person.

I wish I could have seen them perform, but like every true worship leader, my first responsibility is to the flock of God that I lead worship for faithfully every week. As I often teach those worship leaders whom I am mentoring - the church doesn’t care how many hit songs I’ve written, how many gold records I have, how many stadiums I’ve led worship in... all they care about is am I going to meet with Jesus when we gather together to worship Him.

Here’s a good perspective to keep one humble. I picked up a book of the top songs of the revival periods around the turn of the century. This book was the WOW Worship of the day. I only recognized one song - Just As I Am. I wonder how many songs we sing today will actually survive beyond the generation they were written in. Just a healthy perspective to balance out the worship star crazed industry that exists today.

Terry and Nancy Clark Recording!!!

Last night Terry and Nancy Clark did a live worship recording for their new upcoming release. This new release features medleys of all their worship favorites - the ones they do in their concerts. As I worshipped along with the fairly good sized group of worshippers, I found myself being swept up in glorious praise!!! I loved singing some of these songs that were so important to me as a young believer. It was also great to hear many of the worship classics that Terry has written. I found myself thinking - I know this one and I know that one. Great memories!!!

Chases Graduates... And Meeting “The Girl”

Well.... Chase Michael Davis (Our middle son) is now officially out of high school. He graduated from Calvary Chapel High School at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. I can’t tell you how proud Roxie and I are of Chase. This last year we saw him grow as a musician, worshipper and leader in the high school ministry at Costa Mesa Calvary. I can see the hand of God on him. Originally, he wanted to go to Musicians Institute, but it looks like he’s going to go to Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa. Why do you ask? Well... that’s where “the girl” comes in.

Roxie and I had the privilege of finally meeting his official “girlfriend.” She graduated with him from Costa Mesa. We are still getting to know her, but all the families we’ve spoken to have told us that she is the pick of the school. She’s fun, respectful and she loves Jesus. I remember Chase describing her to me as really “holy”... more than most. It looks like they will both be attending O.C.C. for the next couple of years.

What happens after O.C.C? Well, at the East Coast Worship Summit I had the privilege of playing with Chester Thompson aka drummer for Gensis and Phil Collins. He knows the founder of the L.A. Music Academy. He suggested we check that place out so Chase is looking into it. The good thing about Chase going to O.C.C. is that I won’t loose him as a drummer at church. The bummer is that one day that day will come. I hate growing up.

Meeting Michael Card!!!

Roxie and I were waiting in the hotel lobby to come home and low and behold, there was Michael Card. He was one of the workshop presenters at the East Coast Worship Summit. What a great honor to meet a pioneer in Christian Music.

What great words of wisdom did he give us? Directions to Starbucks!!! Unfortunately it was over a mile away... which he hiked to earlier that morning. Yep... Michael Card is a stud!!!

East Coast Worship Summit....

For those of you who don’t know about it.... there is a great conference on the East Coast called the East Coast Worship Summit. It was very well put together by 1Christian1.net. I was invited to come out and lead worship for the Thursday morning session and teach a couple of workshops.

I had the privilege of meeting Laura Story and Mark Roach. Laura is the author of that amazing song... Indescribable and leads worship at her church in Atlanta, Georgia. It’s amazing to meet another worship leader that is grounded in the local church and yet impacting the nation with their ministry. There is a rumor that she might be coming to Southern California, so I hope to see her and her husband again!!!

I also met Mark Roach again!!! The first time was at NAB in Las Vegas where he was the guest artist for the Technologies For Worship Pavillion. This time, he was Mark Roach the worship leader. Unfortunately, I arrived a 2 am on Wednesday so I missed both their worship sets. It was a whirlwind time of ministry - but well worth it.

I look forward to seeing what God is going to do with the East Coast Worship Summit in the years to come!!!

Holland Davis with Teen Challenge

I had the privilege of leading worship with one of the Teen Challenge Choirs. It was an amazing morning of testimony and worship - and of course the Word!!!

I have a special heart for Teen Challenge. It was while watching The Cross And The Switchblade that I received the call to the ministry. I was around 14 or 15 at the time. I thought to myself that if the gospel has the power to transform the lives of broken drug addicted gang members in New York city, then I want to preach it as far and as wide as I can.

Their anniversary is being celebrated this year. I’m praying that I’ll have the opportunity to meet David Wilkerson and thank him for his faithfulness to our Lord!!!
